Ultimate Guide to Persuasive Writing

Updated: May 1, 2023

Are you considering taking the law admission test to gain entry into law at the University of New South Wales? Yes? Then you will definitely need to up your game when it comes to persuasive writing.

What is persuasive writing?

Persuasive writing is simply producing a piece of writing that aims to convince readers of the writer's opinion or theory. It is where the writer carefully chooses words and develops logical arguments to convince the reader that the writer's opinion is correct.

It is different to objective writing. Objective writing is where the writer presents views and arguments in an impartial way. It avoids exaggeration and bias and does not aim to persuade.

How are persuasive writing skills assessed as part of the LAT?

In Part B of the LAT, you will be given multiple pieces of stimulus texts such as excerpts from articles, graphs and comic strips. These materials will present different points of view. Your job is to use those stimulus materials to formulate your own point of view and produce a piece of writing that aims to convince the markers of your point of view.

The important point with persuasive writing is that you must take a side and argue it. Do not sit on the sidelines. That is a big no-no.

What are the best persuasive writing strategies?

To ace the LAT, you need to showcase your persuasive writing skills. That means adapting your word choices, appealing to evidence, emotions and authority, and ensuring your writing has a logical flow.

At LAT PLUS we take students through practical examples and complete sample practice questions with the students. We help them sharpen their skills so that when they sit the LAT, they are not just ready, but CONFIDENT!
